A 38-year-old Joliet-area man charged with fatally injuring a 37-year-old Joliet woman in a hit-and-run crash has a history of unlicensed driving and was serving an 18-month suspended sentence on a 2010 drug conviction, Will County court records show.Charles D. McAfee, of the 2100 block of Luther Avenue, is charged with failure to report a collision involving death and being responsible for a collision causing injury or death in connection with the death of Leticia Magana.
Magana was struck about 12:30 a.m. Oct. 2 while walking on the 600 block of Bluff Street in Joliet. She was flung to the west side of the street when she was struck, police said.
Witnesses told police the woman was hit by a northbound sport utility vehicle that fled on Ruby Street.
McAfee, who reportedly turned himself in to police four days later, could be sentenced up to 15 years in prison if convicted of failing to report the collision.
He is scheduled to appear in court Oct. 28.
In the past five years, August 2006 and February 2010, McAfee received suspended sentences after twice pleading guilty in Will County Court to driving on a suspended license. In June 2010 he received a suspended 18-month sentence after pleading guilty to felony possession of a controlled substance.
McAfeee remained in the Will County Detention Facility Oct. 11 in lieu of $350,000 bail.
