Real brain child here....Man dies after jumping in Lake Michigan to evade police

A man who police said jumped into Lake Michigan as they tried to check his identity died at a nearby hospital after authorities pulled him from the water.

The man, believed to be in his 30s, jumped into the 60-degree lake waters off Olive Park at about 8:11 p.m. Wednesday near the 600 block of North Lake Shore Drive after he was approached by Near North District officers who wanted to verify his identity, police said.

After about 45 minutes of searching in dark conditions, authorities pulled the man from the water and rushed him to nearby Northwestern Memorial Hospital, where he was later pronounced dead, according to police and the Cook County medical examiner's office.

Officials hadn't yet located family for the man and weren't releasing his identity, according to a medical examiner's spokesman.

Investigators were handling the case as a suicide, according to a police spokesman.

An autopsy is scheduled for later today.
