Here's a tip from your old Uncle Shavedlongcock... When any body of water has very high dangerous waves... DON'T GO BY IT!

Chicago Police Search For Missing Young Man In Lake Michigan

The Chicago Police Marine Unit and the U.S. Coast Guard this morning resumed the search for a man who went missing in Lake Michigan Saturday night, police said.

The man was reported missing near Oak Street Beach, and after a rescue attempt by fire and police the incident has turned into a recovery mission, officials said.

The search was suspended early this morning and resumed at about 7 a.m. in the lake between Walton Street on the north and Ontario Street to the south, said Chicago Police New Affairs Officer Michael Sullivan.

Police and the coast guard planned to use helicopters to assist in the search, he said.

Some of the missing man’s family members attempted to save him after he fell in Saturday night, police said, but weren’t able to hold on. A police marine unit boat was also able to locate and reach the man but couldn’t bring him aboard because the waves were too high, police said.

The call came in at about 9:37 p.m. and until about 11 p.m. a Chicago Fire Department helicopter and a police marine unit boat combed the area hoping to rescue the people, according to police and a fire official on the scene.

The fire department took a woman to Northwestern hospital in good-to-fair condition, Chicago Fire Department Spokesman Will Knight. She was treated for hyperventilation and was not in the water.

The Chicago Police Department suspended their recovery effort before 1 a.m.

Most fire personnel left the area at about 11:05 p.m. because the rescue attempt had turned to a recovery event, which was being continued by police, according to a fire official on the scene.

During the rescue attempt a group of five men and woman who appeared to be connected to the victim declined comment but were visibly upset. As the rescue attempt turned to a recovery search, those people were escorted away in police vehicles.
