A plainclothes cop traded shots with two men in the Bronx, wounding one, police said Wednesday.
The gun battle erupted just before midnight Tuesday at the corner of E. 187th St. and Prospect Ave. near Fordham University, cops said.
Exact details of how the shooting unfolded were not immediately clear, but a witness said she saw the officer and a man exchange several shots from opposite corners of the street.
"He had no uniform," said Nancy Melendez, 44. "I heard him say, 'Police! Stop!' or something like that. But the man kept shooting at him."
While Melendez said she only saw one gunman, police sources said surveillance camera footage showed two men approach the cop and open fire.
The cop returned fire, striking one of the suspects in the leg. The officer was not hurt.
The wounded gunman later walked into the emergency room of Saint Barnabas Hospital and was arrested. The second man remains at large.
An unmarked Chevy Impala belonging to the officer remained in the middle of E. 187th St. Wednesday morning with a bullet hole in the door and at least six shell casings surrounding it.
