Photo: Steven "The Village Idiot" McGeeA 17-year-old boy was shot and killed Monday afternoon on a street in the Washington Park neighborhood that has been the scene of previous shootings.
Killed was Steven McGee of the 6100 block of South Michigan Avenue, according to the Cook County medical examiner's office. An autopsy is scheduled for later today, officials said.
At about 5:50 p.m., McGee was walking in the 6000 block of South Prairie Avenue -- about three blocks from his home -- when a man passing by on a bicycle warned that "guys with guns" had gathered in a nearby alley, police said.
Then one or two men emerged from the alley and opened fire on McGee, striking him in the head and upper torso, police said.
McGee was rushed to Stroger Hospital, where he was later pronounced dead, according to police and the medical examiner's office.
Police said McGee, who reached 17 only six days ago, was affiliated with an area gang, but didn't offer a motive.
The block where the teen was shot was the scene of at least two summer shootings, including one where a 14-year-old boy was shot in the neck. Just last week, an 18-year-old West Pullman man was shot and killed two blocks away from the scene of Monday's slaying.
No arrests had been made in the shooting as of this morning.
Calumet Area detectives were investigating.
