MONTGOMERY, AL— Thirty-seven-year-old Derrick O. Mason was given a lethal injection and was pronounced dead at 6:49pm central time Thursday at Holman Prison.
Attorneys for Derrick Mason had asked the U.S. Supreme Court for a stay as the hour approaches for his scheduled execution.
Mason was put to death for the March 24, 1994 shooting death ofHuntsville convenience store clerk Angela Cagle.
Alabama Gov. Robert Bentley turned down a request for clemency on Wednesday.
Bentley said in a brief statement Wednesday that he saw no reason to overturn the decision of the jury that found Mason guilty and recommended that he be executed.
Court records show that Cagle was shot to death during a robbery. Her body was found lying across a desk in a storeroom.
