Boy 15 and his mom 27 shot on Chicago's beautiful West Side!
Boy, 15, shot in head, mom also struck in West Side drive-by shooting
A 15-year-old boy was shot in the head and his mother was also wounded in a drive-by shooting outside their West Side home Sunday afternoon, Chicago police said today.
The boy was reported to be in extremely critical condition this morning and was not expected to live, authorities said.
The shooting happened at about 4 p.m. Sunday on the 700 block of North Springfield Avenue in the city's East Garfield Park neighborhood, police said.
Police said that the teen and his 37-year-old mother were standing on the front porch of their home, when a gunman inside a passing older model white or cream-colored car fired multiple shots.
The boy was struck in the head and his mother was struck in the arm. Both were taken to Mount Sinai Hospital. The boy was listed in critical condition late Sunday, while his mother's injuries weren't serious.
Police hadn't determined whether either victim was the intended target, noting that several others were standing nearby at the time of the shooting.
The teen is a sophomore at Marshall Metro High School, according to Chicago Public Schools.
Police had only a vague description of the vehicle, which fled north on Springfield Avenue, but none at all of the gunman.
No arrests had been made.
