Two children who were taken to Christ Medical Center in Oak Lawn in critical condition Wednesday after they were found unresponsive at a house fire in Hickory Hills have died, the Cook County medical examiner’s office said.
Roberts Park Fire Protection District Chief Jeff Ketchen said.
Firefighters were called about a house fire in the 8900 block of Emerald Court at about noon, Roberts Park Fire Protection District Chief Jeff Ketchen said.
When they arrived, they were told two children, ages 3 and 5, were in an upstairs bedroom in the back of house, Ketchen said. Firefighters found them unresponsive in an upstairs bedroom, he said. The mother was in the front yard in a state of panic, Ketchen said. She was not injured.
According to a relative, three older children were at school when the fire broke out.
The fire was put out in about 15 minutes, Ketchen said. No firefighters were injured. The fire possibly started while the occupants were cooking a lamb in the bathtub.
