Glendale, California - Unexpected medical issues have forced two longtime Glendale police dogs to retire early and another one to work part time, leaving just one full-strength dog to carry the unit.
Police dogs Marlin and Sam retired this summer after roughly six years sniffing out bombs, narcotics and suspects. Marlin lost his sense of smell, and Sam, after years of strenuous physical demands, developed arthritis and a pinched nerve that causes his legs to fall asleep.
The third dog, Quwai, is working only part time in narcotics searches because he also has been struggling with medical issues, including having difficulty climbing and bouncing in and out of cars. If it weren’t for the fact that the unit is stretched so thin, police said Quwai would likely be in retirement too, according to the Glendale News-Press.
